Chelo Vargas Sierra, PhD in Translation and Interpreting (English) and recipient of the Doctorate Extraordinary Award, is a Professor and founding member of the Interuniversity Institute of Applied Modern Languages (IULMA), which she has directed since 2021. She also holds a Master’s in Terminology from Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a Master’s in Audiovisual Translation, Localisation, Subtitling, and Dubbing from the University of Cádiz.

She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses on subjects such as terminology, legal translation, economic and financial translation, translation technologies, corpus linguistics, and general translation at various institutions, including the University of Alicante, the International University Menéndez Pelayo, and the Ricardo Palma University (Lima, Peru), where she is an Honorary Professor and an honorary member of the College of Translators of Peru. Her research focuses on terminology applied to translation, specialised languages (English-Spanish), corpus linguistics, and translation technologies. She has extensively published and participated in more than 90 international conferences.

She has led research and knowledge transfer activities and has chaired international conferences such as enTRetextos 2021, AESLA 2016, CILC 2013, and RITerm 2012. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator of the DIGITENDER project (TED2021-130040B-C21), focused on the digitisation of multilingual terminological resources and the analysis of lexicon and discourse from a gender perspective. She has also served as editor and author of various international publications and is part of the editorial boards of journals such as Ibérica and Sendebar.

Chelo Vargas Sierra chairs the Technical Standardisation Committee 191 for Terminology. She has delivered more than 50 international seminars at universities and organisations such as the European Union and Translators’ Associations. Her career includes participation in several national and international master's programmes, as well as serving as a sworn translator for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
