Antonio Ricarte was born in San Vicente del Raspeig (Alicante) in 1981. He got his degree in Biology and the PhD at the University of Alicante (UA), both with honours. Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer in Zoology, at the UA. Previously, he has been a FPU predoctoral fellow of the Ministry of Education (UA, 2004-2008); Senior Technician of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) project (UA, 2009-2010); E.C. Pelham-Clinton Fellow in Entomology (National Museums Scotland, UK, 2011-2013); researcher at the BioSense Institute and at the Department of Biology and Ecology (University of Novi Sad, Serbia, 2013-2014); Senior Researcher at the CIBIO Institute (UA, 2017); lecturer at the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja, UNIR (2016-2018); and Distinguished Researcher at the CIBIO (UA, 2018-2023).
He is a specialist in syrphids (Diptera: Syrphidae), which play a crucial role in pollination of wild and cultivated plants, as well as in regulating populations of pest insects. Most of his research is focused on this entomological group. He has more than 150 publications, has participated in more than 40 projects, having led some of them, for example, one of Fauna Ibérica, financed by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. He has attended numerous national and international conferences. He is editor of the journals Zootaxa and Cuadernos de Biodiversidad. He is also involved in outreach activities, such as the creation and maintenance of the Twitter account @sirfidos.
