Antonio Ricarte was born in San Vicente del Raspeig (Alicante) in 1981. He achieved his First degree in Biology and PhD at the University of Alicante (UA), both with Honours. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Zoology at the UA. Previously, he was a FPU PhD Fellow from the Ministry of Education (UA, 2004-2008); a Senior Technician for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) project (UA, 2009-2010); an E.C. Pelham-Clinton Fellow in Entomology (National Museums Scotland, UK, 2011-2013); a researcher at the BioSense Institute and in the Department of Biology and Ecology at the University of Novi Sad (Serbia, 2013-2014); a Senior Collaborating Researcher at the CIBIO Institute (UA, 2017); and teaching staff at the International University of La Rioja, UNIR (2016-2018); and Distinguished Researcher at CIBIO (UA, 2018-2023).
He specializes in hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), a group of insects that play a crucial role in pollination and in regulating pest insect populations. His research focuses primarily on this entomological group. He has over 150 publications and has participated in more than 40 projects, including leading a project on Fauna Iberica, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. He has attended numerous national and international conferences. He served as an advisor in the preparation of the IUCN European Red List of Hoverflies. He was editor of the journals Zootaxa (2016-2025) and Cuadernos de Biodiversidad (2021-2025). He is Secretary of the Spanish Entomological Association. He is involved in various outreach activities, including the Twitter account @sirfidos.
