Jorge Marcos Marcos holds a PhD in Health and Gender Studies from the University of Granada (UGR) and also holds an Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree in Public Health (Europubhealth), awarded by a consortium comprising the University of Rennes, France (coordinating institution); the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, Poland; the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom; the University of Copenhagen, Denmark; and the University of Granada. In addition, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Anthropology and a Diploma in Education Sciences from UGR.
He has been a research fellow in the Department of Anthropology and Social Work at the University of Granada, as well as a research collaborator at the Childhood Observatory in Andalusia. Between 2005 and 2008, he worked for the Education Department of the Spanish Embassy in Rabat (Morocco). After completing his Master's studies in 2010, he was hired by the Carlos III Health Institute to strengthen the “gender and health” line within CIBERESP. In 2014, he rejoined UGR as a researcher to develop a project under the National Drug Plan. Likewise, during several periods of his professional career (January 2012–December 2013 / March 2015–December 2017), he worked as an independent research consultant.
He is currently a professor in the Department of Health Psychology at the University of Alicante. He also serves as an adjunct lecturer at the Escola Valenciana d’Estudis de la Salut and the Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública. His work has primarily focused on health promotion research projects, as well as on the design and implementation of qualitative research methods. Among his research interests, gender as a determinant of health stands out; in his doctoral thesis, he addressed the study of men's health and masculinities from the convergence of the social sciences and health sciences. His research has been published in several internationally renowned scientific journals (J Epidemiol Community Health, Int J Drug Policy, Soc Sci Med, Health Promot Int, Qual Health Research, etc.). He is also co-author of several monographs, such as How to equity proof your policies and interventions (Copenhagen: WHO Regional Office for Europe; 2023), Atlas de las desigualdades de género en salud en Andalucía (Seville: Consejería de Salud, Junta de Andalucía; 2015), and La atención primaria frente a la violencia de género: necesidades y propuestas (Madrid: Secretaria de Estado de Servicios Sociales e Igualdad; 2013).
He has been a member of the “Gender and Health” group of the EASP (recipient of the “Banderas de Andalucía 2017” award). In addition, he was awarded a competitive Talentia predoctoral fellowship (Agencia Andaluza del Conocimiento), a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral contract (Agencia Estatal de Investigación), and the extraordinary PhD award from the University of Granada. He was also part of the group of experts invited by WHO-Europe to collaborate in the development of the “Strategy on the Health and Wellbeing of Men in the WHO European Region” (WHO, 2018). Until October 2024, he served as a member of the WHO Editorial Board overseeing the project “Guidance Document for Research Ethics Committees on Incorporating an Intersectional Sex and Gender Perspective in Infectious Diseases Research Ethics.”
He is currently a board member of SASPAS, affiliated with the Spanish Society of Public Health and Health Administration (SESPAS), and an associate editor of the journal Gaceta Sanitaria (Elsevier).
