Jorge Marcos Marcos holds a PhD in Gender Studies, an Undergraduate Degree in Social Anthropology and a First-Cycle Undergraduate Degree in Education Sciences from the University of Granada. In 2008 he was selected for admission in Europubhealth, an Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree of excellence in public health, by the consortium made up of the EHESP School of Public Health/University of Rennes 1, in Rennes, France; the Jagiellonian University of Cracow, Poland; the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom; the University of Copenhagen, Denmark; and the Andalusian School of Public Health/University of Granada, Spain.

As an undergraduate, he was a research intern at the University of Granada’s Department of Anthropology and Social Work and a research assistant at the Andalusian Childhood Observatory. Between 2005 and 2008, he was a teacher at the Education Department of the Spanish Embassy in Rabat, Morocco. After completing his Master’s degree, in 2010 he was hired as a researcher by the Biomedical Research Networking Centre for Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP) of the Spanish Institute of Health Carlos III to promote a programme on social determinants of health. In 2014 he rejoined the University of Granada as a researcher. Moreover, throughout his career, he has worked as a freelance researcher-consultant in several periods.

At present he is a post-doctoral researcher (Juan de la Cierva programme) at the University of Alicante as a member of the research group in Public Health and the University Institute for Gender Studies Research. He is also a lecturer at the Andalusian School of Public Health. In this area, his work is mainly concerned with health promotion projects and the design and implementation of qualitative and mixed studies. One of his main research interests is gender as a social determinant of health. His PhD thesis, also addressing this topic, analysed men and masculinities from a gender perspective in health.

His research work has been published in internationally recognised scientific journals (International Journal of Drug Policy, International Journal of Public Health, Social Science & Medicine, Sociology of Health & Illness, Qualitative Health Research, Gaceta Sanitaria, etc.). He is also co-author of several scientific monographs, including the Atlas de las desigualdades de género en salud en Andalucía and the Guía para incorporar el enfoque de género en la planificación de políticas sociales, as well as the official report “La atención primaria frente a la violencia de género: necesidades y propuestas”, published by Spain’s State Secretary’s Office for Social Services and Equality.

He belongs to the Andalusian School of Public Health’s research group in Gender and Health, recipient of the Banderas de Andalucía Award 2017.  Besides, he has received the PhD Special Award from the University of Granada, a fellowship (Talentia programme) and a post-doctoral one (Juan de la Cierva programme). Recently, he was part of the group of experts invited by the World Health Organization to work on including the gender perspective in the "Strategy on the health and well-being of men in the WHO European Region" (WHO, 2018).
