Benoît Filhol is a lecturer and researcher in French Studies at the University of Alicante. His academic career, developed across France and Spain, combines philological training, literary and cultural research, university teaching and teaching innovation.

He studied at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier III, where he obtained degrees in French Studies and Spanish Studies. He continued his research training at the University of Alicante as a research fellow in the Department of Spanish Philology, Literary Theory and General Linguistics, specialising in Latin American literature, literary theory and comparative literature. In 2013, he obtained his PhD in Literary Studies with a doctoral dissertation entitled El Perú en la narrativa de Ventura García Calderón, supervised by Carmen Alemany Bay and Eva Valero Juan, focusing on literary representations of Peru and processes of rewriting and cultural circulation.

For approximately ten years, he taught and conducted research at the Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), where he taught French language, French culture and civilisation, literature, foreign language teaching and cultural studies. He also coordinated languages within the Faculty of Education and contributed to the university’s internationalisation activities as a mobility tutor. He currently works in the area of French Studies at the University of Alicante, where he combines teaching in French language, literature, culture and translation with research, academic management and initiatives promoting French-speaking cultures.

His interdisciplinary research encompasses literary and cultural studies, comparative literature, contacts between languages and cultures, and language and literature teaching. His first research strand focused on Latin American and comparative literature, particularly Ventura García Calderón and cultural relations between Europe and Latin America. This led to his interest in the French-speaking and Hispanic worlds, travel, exoticism and rewriting, as illustrated by his research on Pierre Loti and Ventura García Calderón.

A second strand addresses language, identity, multilingualism and translation, including his study of “Frañol” in Lydie Salvayre’s Pas pleurer and its translation into Spanish. He has also conducted research on language and literature teaching, particularly project-based learning and the action-oriented approach.

His research has subsequently expanded towards contemporary cultural imaginaries. He has co-edited Imágenes distópicas. Representaciones culturales (2022) and Fantasía, aventura y sociedad. Perspectivas contemporáneas (2025), exploring the relationships between literature, film, television series, video games and popular culture. His current research focuses on contemporary French literature and its social discourses, with particular attention to language, violence, gender and power, as well as slang, colloquial registers, humour and animal imagery.

He is a member of two research groups at the University of Alicante: Escritoras de Expresión Francesa y Género (EEFFG) and Adquisición de Lenguas Adicionales (ACQUA).
