María José Fernández Torres earned her Undergraduate Degree in Chemical Sciences (1992) and her PhD in Chemical Engineering (1996) from the University of Alicante. A lecturer in Chemical Engineering at this university since 1994, she lectures mostly the following subjects: Introduction to Chemical Engineering (undergraduate degree, year 1), Chemical Reactor Design I (undergraduate degree, year 3) and Transport Phenomena (Master’s degree, year 1). She has undertaken postdoctoral stays at the universities of Nottingham and Cambridge in the UK and the Babes-Bolyai University in Romania. Her passion for lecturing and travelling has led her to lecture Chemical Engineering courses in English at foreign universities, namely the University of Nottingham (UK) and the universities of the Witwatersrand and Cape Town, South Africa. She attended several talks at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, after which the sustainability of the planet became part of her research interests. She took several courses on toxicology, ecology and green chemistry, such as the Educators Seminar on Teaching Sustainability organised by the Center for Sustainability at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zürich, Switzerland (2005). She has a good track record of research papers with publications in prestigious journals with high JCR indices. Her latest publications are on Optimization of Chemical Processes.
