Clive Bellis was born in Reading (United Kingdom). After graduating from the University of Sheffield in 1990 with a Class One Honours Degree in Spanish Studies, he was awarded a scholarship for postgraduate study by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and subsequently completed a two-year Master’s Degree in International Studies at the University of Alicante in 1993. 

As a translator and style supervisor, he has worked extensively with the Spanish toy and plastics industries, as well as in a number of academic fields, including English Studies, Translation, Contemporary History and Women’s Studies.  

In 1999, he joined the English Department at the University of Alicante, where he has taught a wide range of first degree subjects in English Studies, Translation and Interpreting, Humanities and Computer Studies, initially in a part-time capacity and since 2007 as a full-time lecturer. His current academic and research specialisms include Anglophone Culture and Lexicography. 

His publications as co-editor include Shakespeare, Cervantes and Rabelais: New Interpretations and Comparative Studies (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2011) and The Alicante Journal of English Studies, Number 25: Special Issue on Global Shakespeare (University of Alicante, 2012). He was style supervisor for Atlantis (journal of the Spanish Association for Anglo-American Studies) from 2003 to 2006, and has been a member of the research group “Shakespeare and the Spanish Golden Age” since 2013. He is currently working on a compact Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary as well as on a concise grammar of English, both for Herder Editorial. 

He has also worked as a speaking examiner (since 1996) and as a team leader (since 2007) for the Cambridge English Language Assessment (University of Cambridge) main suite examinations (KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE).
