Guadalupe Ortiz holds a Bachelor’s and PhD in Sociology from the University of Alicante (Extraordinary Awards for both degrees) and a Master’s in Environmental Strategies and Management from the University of Valencia. She is currently a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology I, Deputy director of the University Institute for Water and Environmental Sciences, member of the University Institute for Tourism Research at the University of Alicante and of the CIEMAT-UA Joint Unit. She has two recognized research periods (sexenios). She serves on the board of the Society for Risk Analysis-Europe and chairs its Iberian Chapter. She leads the research group “Population, Environment and Development” and is Deputy Director of the Socioeconomic Observatory on Floods and Droughts. She chaired the Research Committee 21 on Sociology and Environment of the Spanish Federation of Sociology (2016–2020) and is currently a board member of the Research Network 22 Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty of the European Sociological Association (ESA). She is co-founder and current Secretary of the International Network of Socio-environmental Studies (RIDES), which brings together researchers specializing in the social dimensions of the environment from 16 Ibero-American institutions.

She has taken part in numerous research projects that have enabled her to specialize in Environmental and Risk Sociology. Among the most recent projects are:

-Tools for the prevention and management of social impacts of floods in coastal areas (PID2021-122500OB-I00), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Principal Investigator. 2022–2026.

-Risks, vulnerability and social adaptation to extreme water events (CIAICO/2021/173), funded by the Valencian Regional Government (Department of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society). Principal Investigator. 2021–2025.

-COST Action AlertHub: Warning Communication Knowledge Network (funded by the European Commission). Member of the Management Committee. 2024–2028.

-Social Management of the Environment: diagnosis, opportunities and resistances towards transdisciplinarity (GV/2015/124 – GR-14-14), funded by the Valencian Regional Government and the University of Alicante. Principal Investigator.


She has undertaken research stays at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy), the Royal Complutense College at Harvard University (USA), the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University (USA), the University of La Frontera (Chile) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil).

Her teaching work has focused mainly on the Sociology Degree, where she is responsible for the courses Social Management of the Environment and Research Methodology in Social Sciences. She has also taught in the Master’s in Conservation of Biodiversity and Restoration of Marine and Terrestrial Environments, the Master’s in Tourism Planning and Management, and the Master’s in Technologies and Public Policies for Environmental Management at the University of Alicante. In addition, she has taught methodology and social research techniques in the Criminology and Public Administration degrees.
