José Marcos Ortega Álvarez has a position of full professor at the Civil Engineering Department at University of Alicante (Spain) from April 2024. He belongs to the research group “Durability of materials and constructions in Engineering and Architecture” of the same university, in which he developed his PhD thesis thanks to a competitive fellowship of the Spanish Education Ministry (FPI programme). His research topics are focused on sustainability of construction and building materials, microstructure and durability of eco-friendly cement-based materials, performance of concretes exposed to harmful environments and non-destructive techniques for characterizing cementitious materials.
He is the co-author of 32 scientific manuscripts in JCR journals, 5 book chapters and 28 communications to national and international conferences. He has participated in 7 competitive research projects (3 of them as researcher responsible) and in 16 contracts of special relevance with companies and public bodies. He has been the advisor of one PhD thesis.
He has received 3 awards since 2010, highlighting the “Young Investigator Award in Environmental and Sustainable fields 2018” given by Applied Sciences journal. At present, he has an active international collaboration with Professor Fernando G. Branco from “Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) – Functional Performance Group” of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), where he has developed 2 post-doctoral research stays in the years 2019 and 2020. He also keeps another active international collaboration with Professor Viviana Letelier from University of La Frontera (Chile). He has been co-guest editor of the 5 special issues published in JCR journals and he is reviewer for 25 international JCR journals. Finally, he has one six-year term.
In relation to his teaching activity, since joining the University of Alicante, he has taught 13 different subjects, belonging to 9 degrees, being the coordinating professor in 7 of these subjects. He is co-author of 15 communications to international conferences on university teaching and has participated in 14 teaching innovation projects, being the coordinator in 7 of them. He has tutored 37 final-year, degree's and master's degree academic projects and has carried out 3 teaching stays. He has 2 five-year teaching periods and in the academic years 2018-19 and 2019-20 he has received the rating of excellent in the evaluation of his teaching activity carried out in accordance with the framework of the DOCENTIA programme of the ANECA (Spanish National Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation).
