Manuel Martínez García (hereinafter MMG) is Full Professor of Microbiology at the University of Alicante (Catedrático de Universidad). Since his first paper published in 2007, MMG has published over 70 peer-review papers in International Journals listed in the Journal Citation Index in addition to other contributions to book chapters. He has a total of 4,800 citations and 89% of his publications have been in Journals in Q1, and 40% of papers in journals that rank in the top 10 ranking in Microbiology. MMG has published in prestigious journals such as Nature Communications (two papers; as lead authors and PI), Science, PNAS, Nature Biotechnology, ISME Journal (IF=9,6; a total of 10 papers). The i10 and H indexes are 55 and 33, respectively; and continuously growing. The average index factor of journals where MMG has disseminated his science in the last 5 years is near 8. He has more than 3,000 hours of teaching at the Master and Degree level in Life Sciences
MMG was graduated with full marks and honors in Biology from the University of Alicante (Spain) and in 2005 he received a PhD in Molecular Microbial Ecology. In Europe, MMG conducted three postdoctoral short stays: the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (Bremen), Ludwig-Maximilians University (Munich) and the Laboratory of Photosynthesis at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. During 2009-2011, MMG moved to USA, where as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Single Cell Genomics Center (Bigelow Laboratory Maine, USA), he was developing cutting-edge techniques of Single Cell Genomics combined with Metagenomics to study the metabolic capabilities of uncultured marine and freshwater microbes. Nowadays, MMG is Associate Professor of Microbiology at the University of Alicante.
In our lab, we are exploring new ways within Single Cell and Virus Genomics in marine and human (micro-) environments in combination with Metagenomics and viromics with special focus in the interaction of viruses and their hosts in marine systems to understand how these interactions shape the evolution, diversity, and structure of microbial and viral communities. MMG is funded by Moore Foundation and other National Spanish Agencies. Contact me for more information about open positions and on-going projects.
