Marinela Garcia Sempere

Degree in Hispanic Philology, orientation Valencian Philology from the University of Alicante (1986). PhD in Catalan Philology from the Universitat d’Alacant (1997). Secondary education teacher from 1986 to 1993. Teacher at the Universitat d’Alacant since 1990, and currently university professor at the same University where, in addition, she has held various positions. Visiting professor at University College Dublin (Ireland) 2009—2010 and Durham and Northumbria Universities (United Kingdom) 2016—2017.

Since 2005, she has lead the Universitat d’Alacant's research group "Writers and printing in the transition from the 15th to the 16th century", which later became "Explanat: research on Catalan language and literature". Since then, she has directed two regional research projects and three state-level research projects. She has supervised four doctoral theses and five final master's theses.

Her early publications focus on recognized authors of Catalan literature such as Ausiàs March or Anselm Turmeda. As a continuation of the doctoral thesis, on the religious work of Bernat Fenollar, she began a line of research in text editing and religious literature that has led to the publication of several works, the completion of research projects and the defense of doctoral theses on hagiographic and mariological subjects. The most recent works in this line focus on the Catalan version of the Legenda aurea, the transmission and characteristics of the complete manuscripts that preserve it and the particularized study of some of the lives of saints included in that compilation. At the moment she is editing one of the manuscripts of the Catalan version of the Legenda aurea: two volumes have been published during 2022. In addition, her research has also dealt with short texts such as some poems about the passion of Mary.

The interest in text editing texts has also materialized in another line of research, the publishing of Catalan falconry treatises, with the recent result of the publication of a book, participation in a project and several works on the subject. She has also supervised doctoral theses on the scholarly edition of medieval texts published in the modern era and on Valencian women writers of the modern era. She has organized scientific meetings related to these lines of research and has participated in panels for doctoral theses on these subjects.

She is currently director of the Department of Catalan Philology. She has four recognized six-year research terms, one non-university six-year term and 6 five-year teaching terms.
