Lorena Segura Abad began her studies for an Undergraduate Degree in Mathematics at the University of Murcia, where she completed the first two years, and later moved to the Complutense University of Madrid to study Computer Science. After completing her degree, she received an Intercampus scholarship from the International Cooperation Agency for an academic collaboration with the Western Catholic University in Santa Ana, El Salvador, an experience that left a deep mark on her. She holds a PhD from the University of Alicante with a grade of Excellent, a cum laude distinction and the PhD Special Award.
In her professional life, she worked for two years in a software development company where her passion for teaching was soon discovered and she joined the training department. She was a lecturer at the University of Alcalá de Henares for one semester, and the following semester she became part of the teaching and research staff at the University of Alicante (1998). She is currently a senior lecturer in the area of Applied Mathematics at the UA, although she has been a member of the Mathematical Analysis area at the UA Faculty of Sciences for 25 years.
During this period, she has taught on several undergraduate degrees at the Faculty of Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Marine Sciences), the Undergraduate Degree in Chemical Engineering (currently offered by the UA Polytechnic School), the Faculty of Law’s Undergraduate Degree in Criminology and the Master’s Degree in Teacher Training in Secondary and Upper Secondary Education, Vocational Studies and Languages. At present, she teaches on the undergraduate degrees in Sound and Image Engineering in Telecommunications and Fundamentals of Architecture.
She belongs to the Systemics and Cybernetics group at the University of Alicante and her research work focuses on the study of complex systems, logic and epistemology of the foundations of mathematics. She is co-author of numerous research articles in prestigious journals in the field of mathematics, as well as various contributions to national and international conferences.
Part of her work focuses on scientific dissemination. She is one of the founders of the UA mathematics dissemination group, DIMATES. In this context, she has given multiple lectures, many of them on the history of women mathematicians and their contribution to this discipline. She has collaborated on two books on mathematics dissemination as author and editor. She also belongs to the Editorial Board of the journal Lva2, which has been awarded the first prize in the “Science in Action” international competition, in the online scientific dissemination category.
In her leisure time, she enjoys her passions, which are family and friends, cinema, travelling and exercising in nature; these activities have greatly contributed to her personal growth.
