Academic background

  • Máster en Investigación y Avances en Microbiología
    UNIVERSIDAD DE GRANADA (22/07/2019)
  • Grado en Biología
    University Alicante (16/07/2018)

Graduated in Biology from the University of Alicante in 2018, I have done external practices during the degree in the Microbiology Area of the Elda Universitary Hospital (Alicante). I did the Final Degree Project in the Molecular Microbial Ecology group at the University of Alicante, headed by Dr. Josefa Antón Botella, with the title: "Characterization of new halophilic Bacteroidetes". It was an experimental work, supervised by Dr. Fernando Santos Sánchez, which consisted of obtaining and characterizing isolates of the Bacteroidetes phylum from water samples from the Santa Pola salterns (Alicante), which cover the complete gradient of salinity from sea water to saturation in sodium chloride. This work allowed us to expand our knowledge about the microbial diversity of these environments, as well as the phylogeny of the isolates obtained and their resistance and/or susceptibility to infection by viruses that control their population levels in nature. After the Final Degree Project, I did extracurricular practices in the same group, which consisted of an experimental work of 150 hours.

After the degree, I completed the Official Master's Degree in Research and Advances in Microbiology at the University of Granada. The Master's Thesis was carried out in the Microbial Exopolysaccharides group from the University of Granada, headed by Dr. Victoria Béjar Luque and supervised by Dr. Fernando Martínez-Checa (Director of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Granada). The project consisted of an experimental work, in which new halophilic microorganisms were isolated, characterized and identified in the Saladar of El Margen (Granada), and their possible applications as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR).

In 2020 I joined the Molecular Microbial Ecology group at the University of Alicante again as a PhD student. My thesis is based on the study of the evolution of haloviruses, the main biological agents that control prokaryotic populations in high salinity environments. In this research we try to elucidate the main mechanisms that underlie the evolution of viral populations over time, and how these are happening and interacting with their hosts, focusing mainly on the micro-diversity of species, both viral as prokaryotes.
