Specialized in bacterial genetics and genetic engineering. He has worked with various microorganisms (with emphasis on Azotobacter vinelandii, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in different aspects of genomic organization, regulation of translation and gene expression, signal transduction in two-component systems and regulation of CRISPR / Cas systems expression.
He has previously worked at the Departamento de Genética de la Universidad de Sevilla, Institut de Génétique et Microbiologie de la Université de Paris-Sud/CNRS, Departamento de Biología Celular y Genética de la Universidad de Málaga, Department of Human Genetics, Eccles Institute, of the University of Utah and at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Salt Lake City.
