Berta Lillo-Gutiérrez holds a PhD in History from the University of Alicante. Her primary research focus is on the neutrality of Spain and Italy during the First World War from a gender perspective, a topic she explored in her dissertation, “Uncertain Neutrality in the Face of the Great War: The Gender of the Nation (Italy and Spain).” Additionally, her work examines the monarchy during the Restoration period, particularly the figure of Queen María de las Mercedes, as well as the use of caricature and literature as historical sources. She has published articles in prestigious academic journals such as Ayer, Rubrica Contemporánea, and Cahiers de Civilisation Espagnole, and contributed chapters to books from publishers including the University of Cantabria Press and Dickinson. She is the author of the book “Masculine Nation vs. Feminine Nation” (University of Alicante, 2021).

She has conducted research stays at the European University Institute, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and the University of Leeds, and has participated in two Erasmus teaching programs at the French universities Université Paris Nanterre and Institut National Universitaire Champollion-Albi. She has also collaborated as a coordinator in knowledge transfer projects, notably her involvement in the European Researchers’ Night, promoting the dissemination of historical research to the general public.

Her academic career has been recognized with the Elizabeth Greenhalgh Award for Outstanding Emerging Female Scholar in First World War Studies (2025), awarded by the International Society for First World War Studies, as well as the 1st National End-of-Degree Award. Between 2021 and 2025, she held a predoctoral FPU contract and currently works as a substitute lecturer in the Department of Contemporary Humanities at the University of Alicante.
