To earn my Research Methods Proficiency Certificate, I had to undertake a research study. Given my previous professional experience, I chose the field of geotechnics. The study was a multivariate statistical analysis that related swelling pressure to other easily determined geotechnical parameters, such as grain size distribution or the Atterberg limits.
My doctoral work, still in progress, involves the application of optical methods in engineering to perform static analyses (for instance, determining deformations in deck load tests) and dynamic analyses (such as determining the tension exerted on the bars of an articulated structure from the study of its vibrations, or determining the vibration frequency of those structures).
