Academic background

  • DOCTORADO EN BIOLOGÍA EXPERIMENTAL Y MOLECULAR
Centro de Estudios de Doctorado y Posgrado (22/10/2007)
  • Biología
    University Alicante (10/07/2002)

I received a BSc.(2002) in Biology and a Ph.D. (2007) in Genetics from University of Alicante (European Mention in the Doctoral Diploma). I obtained a Fellowship from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (estancias de movilidad postdoctoral en el extranjero) and started my postdoctoral research period at the University of Tuebingen (Germany). Next, I joined the faculty of Biology at University of Alicante (2010). On 2013, I performed a short-term stay, granted by EMBO, in the center for chronobiology at the Division of Biological Sciences at UCSD, California. Since 2018, I am Associate Professor (Profesor Titular) at the Dpt. of Physiology, Genetics and Microbiology of the University of Alicante.

During my PhD Thesis, I carried out in vivo and in vitro approaches and developed genetic tools to study signal transduction pathways related to nitrogen metabolism in the model cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942. This work led to characterization of a multifunctional protein termed PipX and the genetic dissection of the most conserved cyanobacterial two-component signaling system. During my postdoctoral research I worked with the filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7120, a model for the study of cellular differentiation in cyanobacteria (U. Tuebingen) and make connections, in S. elongatus, between an essential two-component protein system and the circadian clock (UCSD-California). At present my research is related to understand how unicellular cyanobacteria sense their environment and respond to environmental changes. I address these fundamental questions by analyzing the response of unicellular model cyanobacteria Synechococcus elongatus. How nitrogen regulators work and function at the molecular level is my primary research goal.

I have participated in 12 research projects as a researcher and in 2 as principal investigator. My research contribution (papers and book chapters) is available in the link to ORCID and/or Publons. In the academic context I am involve in teaching responsibilities since 2010, in Bachelor and Master degrees, and I have supervised 3 Thesis and several research projects corresponding to BSc and MSc degrees.
