Juan Carlos Castro earned a Second-Cycle Undergraduate Degree in Architecture from the ETSAVallès (UPC.Barcelona) and a PhD in Architecture from the University of Alicante (UA). A researcher and lecturer in Architectural Design at the UA Polytechnic School (EPS) since 2006, he is also founder and director of Fab Lab Alicante, as well as a curator and cultural manager of events related to technology, sound art and electronic music.

As an architect he was shortlisted for the FAD Awards 2015 for the Vertical Garden of the Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre; he has won several prizes in international competitions, as Murcia’s Environmental Complex or the extension to the Caravaca Town Hall; and he has also received
three prizes at the AJAC Awards (COAC), which recognize the best emerging architects under 40 years old.

As a researcher and director of Fab Lab Alicante, he directs the REME Research Project, a temporary shelter for emergency situations, selected for the EAC2017 international award; he is one of the inventors of the SURI patent, a quick assembly construction system for temporary shelters, and coordinator of the “Cartografiando Gaza” project, which won an award at the “eme3”
international architecture festival in 2009.

As a curator, he has directed the work and research group Social Sheltering and Musik and Interaction, within Itmakes/Fablinkage, the international platform organised by the Italian Embassy in Madrid that seeks to promote transnational relations between Spanish and Italian technology-based projects. As a curator and cultural manager, he is a member of the team responsible for the ENSO Electronic Music festival. This initiative is part of the EnsoLAB platform, a
Cultural Sound Laboratory made up of musicians, producers and sound artists based in Alicante.
