I hold a degree in Mathematics from the University of Valencia and a PhD in Economics from the University of Alicante, where I received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in 1994. From January 1995 to September 1996, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Davis. In 1996, I joined the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, first as an Associate Professor and, from 2011, as a Full Professor. Since 2014, I have been a Full Professor at the University of Alicante, where I currently serve as Head of the Department of Foundations of Economic Analysis.

During my time at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, I directed the PhD Programme in Economic Analysis and coordinated QEM (Models and Methods of Quantitative Economics), the first Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme in Economics in Spain, jointly organised by Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Bielefeld University and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. At the University of Alicante, I have directed the PhD Programme in Economics and the Master’s Programme in Quantitative Economics.

I have held visiting research positions at institutions including the Center for the Study of Rationality at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Rochester, the University of California, Davis, the California Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Osaka University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and Yale University.

My research focuses on applied game theory, social choice, mechanism design, political economy and, in particular, contest theory. I am the co-author, with Luis C. Corchón, of Contests: Theory and Applications, published by Cambridge University Press in 2024.

I served as Co-Editor of the Journal of Mathematical Economics from January 2020 to December 2025 and have been a member of the editorial boards of Mathematical Social Sciences since 2005 and Law, Ethics and Philosophy since 2011. I also co-edited The Political Economy of Democracy, published by the BBVA Foundation in 2009, and I am a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Gadea Science Foundation.

I have served on the Economics Advisory Committee of the Spanish National Evaluation and Foresight Agency (ANEP), on the committee responsible for evaluating doctoral programmes at the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU), and as Vice-President of the Spanish Economic Association. I am currently President of ASSET (Association of Southern European Economic Theorists).

From July 2019 to January 2020, I served as Director-General for Science and Research of the Generalitat Valenciana. From January 2020 to December 2022, I served as Regional Secretary for Universities and Research.
