Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2021-22

This subject aims to familiarize students in the teaching of English as a second language/ foreign language with the basic teaching tools related to the role of culture and literature in English as an exponent and resource of cultural transmission and to offer training in the development of research lines and specific research methods for these subjects.


This includes training in the integration of English language culture and literature in the development of English language proficiency and gender aspects, the selection of texts and their use in activity design and content planning so that students can develop teaching units and adapt and exploit various types of literary and cultural texts in the English classroom.

General Competences (CG)

  • CG2 : Understand the specific problems related to the linguistic peculiarities presented by Spanish and/or English as regards teaching as a second foreign language at different levels and abilities, as well as the pertinent literary and cultural aspects needed to integrate literature and culture into the L2/LE Spanish/English classroom.
  • CG4 : Ability to apply the knowledge acquired of Spanish and/or English as second foreign languages to teaching.
  • CG6 : Ability to transmit social and cultural values in line with modern, multilingual and multicultural Europe in one's professional activities (research and/or teaching).

 

General Competences acquired at University of Alicante (CGUA)

  • CGUA1 : Comprender y expresarse en un idioma distinto a los oficiales de la Comunidad Valenciana en su ámbito disciplinar.
  • CGUA2 : Ser capaz de utilizar como usuario herramientas básicas en TIC.

 

Specific Competences (CE):>>Conceptual

  • CEE5 : Understand the role of Spanish and/or English literature and culture as instruments for developing the capacity to communicate in the language, as well as the lines of and possibilities for research in this context.
  • CEE6 : Understand and master the specialised bibliography, terminology and conceptual tools that can act as the basis for planning teaching and for research, both with respect to the aspects common to teaching second foreign languages and to that affecting its application to Spanish and/or English.

 

Specific Competences (CE):>>Procedural

  • CPE11 : Ability to use appropriate Spanish/English literary texts to develop linguistic competence and bring the sociocultural context of the respective languages into closer focus.
  • CPE12 : Ability to read and use specialised bibliography, terminology and conceptual tools that can act as the basis for teaching and research, both with regard to the common aspects of teaching second foreign languages and to their application to Spanish and/or English.

 

 

 

Learning outcomes (Training objectives)

  1. Knowledge of instrumental concepts in the subject’s domain.
  2. Knowledge of basic approaches, as well as specific aspects and problems related to the integration of English literature and culture in the teaching of English as a second or foreign language.
  3. Knowledge of key perspectives for research on the subject.
  4. Knowledge of materials, strategies and appraisal tools in order to integrate literature and culture in the teaching of Spanish as a second or foreign language.
  5. Knowledge of information sources and specialized reference bibliography on the subject.
  6. Application of the knowledge acquired in case study activities, problem solving, materials’ analysis, techniques and strategies and to the design of activities.
  7. Analytical and comprehensive use of different information sources and reference bibliography.
  8. Adequate use of terms and conceptual tools specific to the subject.
  9. Application of the acquired knowledge for the accomplishment of academic works.
  10. Responsibility in individual tasks.
  11. Collaboration in collective tasks.
  12. Development of a flexible and critical attitude towards the diversity of methods, theories and perspectives.
  13. Development of the ability for autonomous work.

 

 

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2021-22


1. That the student knows and is able to select English literary texts in the English class L2/LE as an instrument for the development of linguistic competence and sociocultural context of English-speaking countries.

2. That the student is able to apply what he/she has learned related to the design of teaching activities incorporating English literature and culture into the English class L2/LE.

3.That the student is able to select, on an informed basis, materials for the integration of literature and culture into the English class L2/LE.

4. That students obtain the resources to adapt, annotate and exploit literary and cultural texts intended for foreign students.

5. That the student is familiar with and uses in an analytical and comprehensive way bibliography and references.

6. That the student is able to synthesize and analyse content related to the subject matter and to present his/her ideas in an ordered and organised way with clarity and coherence.

7. That the student be able to prepare a paper related to the integration of literature and culture into the L2/LE English class.

8. That the student shows a responsible attitude in individual and collective tasks.

9. That the student takes on and shows in his/her tasks social and cultural values in line with today's Europe.
