La desertificación es la degradación de zonas áridas. Es uno de las grandes problemas ambientales globales que, junto con la pérdida de biodiversidad y el cambio climático, amenaza la productividad y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas terrestres en zonas secas. La desertificación resulta de la mala gestión de las tierras en un contexto de aridez y sus efectos aceleran y, a su vez, se potencian con la pérdida de diversidad, el aumento de las temperaturas y de las sequías. Es un proceso difícilmente reversible, de ahí la importancia de evaluar el estado de degradación de los ecosistemas y desarrollar medidas para mitigar sus efectos.
