Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2020-21

This subject is aimed at the development of oral and aural skills in English, paying special attention to pronunciation, intonation and the understanding of the sound system. Students will learn different aspects such as sounds, word stress, intonation patterns, connected speech,  etc. through different activities (videolessons, exercises, questionnaires, songs,  etc.). The lecturers will explain the different tools and materials on the first day of class. 

This course will take place two days per week (MONDAYS and WEDNESDAYS) from 5.30pm to 8.00pm. Classes will be carried out via Google Meet and students will use an on-line tool including several activities (exercises, games, video lessons, etc) in order to improve their pronunciation skills. Students wille be required to participate and get involved in class activities (voice recording, videos, etc). Additionally, students will need to complete some Moodle activities as a preparation for each session. THe lecturers will explain the tools and provide all the course materials on the first day of class.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2020-21

The objectives will be as follows:

Individual objectives:

1. to be able to identify different sounds in English. 

2. to be able to pronounce adequately the different sounds in English. 

3. to be able to distinguish the different intonation patterns (rhythm, word and sentence stress, etc. )

4. to be able to distinguish  the most important features in pronunciation between British English and North American English (UK vs USA)


Group objectives: 

1. to increase the oral and aural skills of students in class. 

2. to improve the communicative skills through several activities and exercises 

3. to know some of the latest technologies related with English language learning. 


4. to get familiar with some ICTs related with english  pronunciation.
