Course context for academic year 2023-24

The contents taught in this course will provide students with the skills and knowledge to understand the changes that occur within the patterns of health and disease, as well as to examine the different elements involved in the health status of populations. They will also acquire tools to identify and analyze health inequalities between population groups, territories, etc., taking into consideration different theoretical and methodological perspectives. In addition, the course includes training in social and political epidemiology, as well as analysis and evaluation of public policies.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE12 : Identificar los determinantes políticos y sociales de la salud y aplicar los principios de equidad y equidad en la salud en todas las políticas.
  • CE13 : Analizar el principio de la equidad en relación a la clase social al género al grupo étnico y las discapacidades y favorecer una práctica de la salud pública acorde con el enfoque de derechos humanos.
  • CE14 : Analizar los datos de estudios poblacionales en salud pública.
  • CE16 : Construir e interpretar los diferentes indicadores demográficos a partir de las fuentes de datos disponibles y el papel de los factores demográficos en las dinámicas de salud.
  • CE17 : Identificar las desigualdades sociales, políticas y económicas que influyen sobre la distribución desigual de la salud de la población.
  • CE18 : Describir los principales problemas de salud internacional, sus condicionantes y los principios de gobernanza global de la salud pública.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2023-24

1.1. To develop an overview of the historical background, theoretical models, concepts and analytical techniques for the study of health inequalities.
1.2. To develop skills to identify the most appropriate source/s of information for the analysis of health inequalities.
1.3. To promote the integration of the different tools acquired for the analysis of health inequalities.
2.1. Use the conceptual framework of the theories of demographic, epidemiological, health, nutritional and risk transition to understand the changes and evolution of the health status of populations.
2.2. Identify the role of social, cultural, economic and environmental factors as determinants of health dynamics, and reason how they interact with each other.
3.1. Recognize social epidemiology as the study of the social determinants that influence the distributions of health and disease in the population.
3.2. Understand the approach and application of Ecosocial Theory in research on the effect of social determinants on the health of the population.
3.3. Recognize Political Epidemiology as a tool to analyze the effect of institutions and policies on population health.
3.4. Recognize the main features of the design, applications, advantages and disadvantages of multilevel studies for the study of the social determinants of health inequalities.
3.5. Understand the usefulness and purpose of the analysis and evaluation of public policies.
