Pharmacological Foundations for the Design of New Drugs sets out the necessary bases for the discovery and design of new therapeutic agents and their development to medicines. This process involves the isolation of substances from nature or the chemical synthesis of active substances, investigations on the relationships between the structure of these natural compounds or their synthetic analogues and their biological activities, elucidation of their interactions with receptors, determination of their transport and distribution properties, and studies of the subsequent metabolic processes, as well as the use of computational simulations. Knowledge of the mechanisms of pharmacological action is fundamental to optimize or create new therapeutic agents in a rational way. From this perspective, representative models of the mode of action of the different drug families have been disclosed. The description of these pharmacodynamic aspects, together with all the former considerations constitutes a fundamental platform of knowledge necessary for the task of designing new drugs.
