  PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2019-20

It is intended for students who choose this course acquire basic terminology of pharmaceutical chemistry, enabling him to speak with the precision required in the pharmaceutical field, formulating ideas, concepts and connections between them, and being able to think in scientific terms, relating the Organic Chemistry bases with pharmacological activity which presents certain molecules and their metabolism. The student must acquire the operational capacity to apply and relate chemical laws and principles as well as controlling the procedures for troubleshooting heterocyclic organic synthesis, interpreting results and discussing whether these are reasonable. The student must understand the structure and reactivity of heterocycles and common organic functions which are widely distributed in the structures of the drugs, and the existing relationships between these structures and the molecular mechanisms of interaction with various biological targets, therefore approach the design of new drugs. In this subject the student should acquire the skills needed to manage in a Pharmaceutical Chemistry laboratory, including conducting experimental setups, measurements, results and their interpretation, safely handling laboratory equipment, reagents, instruments and application devices. Finally, it is intended that the student is be able to study and plan their activities, either individually or in groups, by searching, selecting and synthesizing information in various sources.

Specific Competences:>>Theoretical

  • CE18 : Relate macroscopic properties with those of individual atoms and molecules, including macromolecules (natural and synthetic), polymers, colloids and other materials.
  • CE19 : Identify the structure and reactivity of the main classes of biomolecules and the chemistry of the main biological processes.
  • CE7 : Understand the kinetics of chemical change and its applications, including catalysis and reaction mechanisms.
  • CE9 : Recognise the nature and behaviour of the functional groups in organic molecules. Understand the main routes of synthesis in organic chemistry.

 

Specific Competences:>> Ability

  • CE30 : Handle chemical reagents, instruments and devices safely.
  • CE31 : Carry out standard laboratory procedures for analytical and synthetic tasks related to organic and inorganic systems.
  • CE32 : Use standard chemical instruments for identification, quantification, separation and structural determination.
  • CE33 : Monitor by observing and measuring chemical properties, events or changes, gathering the appropriate information.
  • CE35 : Interpret data obtained from laboratory observation and measurement.
  • CE37 : Evaluate the risks involved in using chemical substances and laboratory procedures, as well as managing any waste generated correctly.
  • CE38 : Use inductive and deductive methods correctly in the field of Chemistry.
  • CE39 : Recognise and evaluate chemical processes in daily life.
  • CE40 : Relate Chemistry to other disciplines.

  • CGUA3 : Possess computer skills relevant to the field of study.
