It is a transversal subject that presents the Greek language as the instrument of culture in which rational thought has been forged, as well as the bases of most of the scientific, technical and humanistic disciplines, including Philology itself. To this end, it is considered essential to provide the student with the essential rudiments to access texts of medium difficulty in their original language and place them in the corresponding social and historical context.
The course consists of the description and study of the Greek language (history of the language, phonetics, morphology, Greek syntax and lexicon, Greek dialectology and metrics) and the practice of translation and text commentary, necessary to recognize its role as an instrument. especially relevant in the transmission of culture.
During the second semester of the first year, the student can take the Greek Literature: Poetry subject, and for the second year, the subject is Greek Literature: prose.
Finally, in the fourth year, you can also take two more subjects: Greek Tragedy and Greek Comedy.
It should be noted that, for modern language degrees, in the first semester of the second year, the subject Literary Genre and Dialect in Greek is taught.
For first-year students, The Greek language: origin and evolution is a compulsory subject that is offered in concurrence with Latin and European Languages, being able to choose between one of the two subjects. Likewise, in modern language degrees, these subjects can be taken as a Second Language.

1. Cognitive objectives
• Know the origin and evolution of the Greek language and distinguish its main characteristics and phonetic, morphological, syntactic, metric and lexical units.
• Know the origin and evolution of the different Greek literary genres through the texts and identify their main representatives in their historical, political, religious and cultural context.
• Know the transmission routes of Greek literature through the different periods.
Acquire Level 1 of the European Common Framework for Certification in European Languages ¿¿(ECCL) endorsed by EUROCLASSICA, European Common Framework: "Competences common to lexis, morphology, syntax, texts and cultural background. By acquiring single elements of Greek pupils are able to recognize the common principles of Greek.
