Galician Language and Culture II is considered a basic subject (modern language) and it is located within the degrees in Catalan Philology, Spanish: Language and Literature, English studies, French studies and Arabic and Islamic studies; students get to know and analyze the linguistic and cultural reality of Galicia while trained as multipurpose professionals with different skills. The aim of this course is to learn the Galician language, a co-official language in the territory that occupies in Spain, as it happens to many other languages around Europe. Students can associate several sociolinguistic elements in common with the situation of the Valencian Community, because of their affinity.
After completing this subject, students may continue learning the Galicia language by doing the subject ‘Galician Language and Culture I’. Outside Alicante, summer courses with grants are held by other Galician institutions like the University of Santiago de Compostela, University of Vigo, or the University of A Coruña. Optionally, students could make the official exams of the Xunta de Galicia (known as CELGA, certificate of Galician language) which confirms the effective mastery of Galician oral and written language skills, this certificate being essential to apply for the different levels of civil services in Galicia. The correspondence with the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR), and ALTE (Association of Language Testers of Europe), determines that obtaining an official certificate CELGA 3 is equivalent to passing a model test of knowledge of language level B2.
Professionally, by learning this language students may acquire specialization with scholarships in Galician research centres (Centro Ramón Piñeiro) or starting a research career in Galician universities; future graduates might become teachers who wish to form part of the community linked to the Galician educational framework (primary and secondary education); moreover, other sectors should not be excluded (translators and interpreters, Galician government civil workers...).
