Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2024-25

The subject "Basic Physics of Structures" belongs to the Physics subject of the core subjects of the degree. It is studied in the second term of the first year and has its continuity in the subject "Basic Physics of Facilities" which is studied during the second year. It is closely related to several subjects of the basic module as it needs mathematical tools for an optimal development of its contents and, on the other hand, it helps to create a common framework in which other concepts that will be developed in later subjects such as those related to the calculation of structures are better understood.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2024-25

  • To acquire the necessary competences for the basic training in rigid solid statics that every university graduate specialising in technical architecture must have, as well as its application to the resolution of practical problems.
  • To have an overview of sliding vectors, the momentum of a sliding vector with respect to a point, systems of sliding vectors, as well as their characterisation, types of systems and reduction.
  • Know how to determine centres of masses and moments of inertia of plane surfaces.
  • Know the fundamental principles of statics and their use in solving practical cases.
  • Understand and apply the methods of statics for the determination of internal forces in flat jointed trusses and isostatic beams.
  • Assimilate basic notions of elasticity as a starting point for the study of deformable solids.
