Course context for academic year 2024-25

The objective of the Graduate degree in Social Work from the University of Alicante is to train social intervention professionals in Social Work intervention methodologies, with a broad understanding of social structures and processes, social change and human behavior , which enable them to:
* Intervene in the social and institutional contexts in which individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities live, assisting, dealing with conflicts, exercising mediation, aid, education, defense, animation tasks and transforming said contexts, including social politics;
* Participate in the formulation and evaluation of policies, services and social initiatives;
* Contribute to active citizenship through empowerment and the guarantee of human and social rights;
* Work on the prevention of social problems.
All this with the ultimate goal of contributing together with other professionals to:
* The social integration of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities
* The constitution of a cohesive society
* The development of quality of life and social welfare

The Fundamentals of Social Work subject located in the first semester of the first year of the Degree offers the student the first contact with the nature of the profession and its studies. It contributes to the profile of social work by providing basic knowledge about the origins, development of social work and current concept; its relationship with the evolution of social action in general and in Spain; as well as the theoretical and ethical foundations that support the discipline and professional action.
The subject offers a framework for global understanding of certain aspects that must be worked on later in the second semester subjects "Initiation to professional skills" and Contexts of social work intervention", keeping in turn a close relationship with the objectives, skills and contents projected in the study plan for the second-year subjects Models and Methods of Social Work I and II.

General Competences (CG)

  • CG1 : Capacitat per a treballar i valorar de manera conjunta amb persones, famílies, grups, organitzacions i comunitats les seues necessitats i circumstàncies.
  • CG2 : Analitzar situacions problema, planificar, desenvolupar, executar, revisar i avaluar la pràctica del treball social amb persones, famílies, grups, organitzacions, i comunitats i amb altres professionals.
  • CG4 : Actuar preventivament en la resolució de les situacions de risc per a la ciutadania, per a si mateix i per als col·legues de professió.
  • CG6 : Demostrar competència professional en l'exercici del treball s+B736ocial.
  • CG7 : Capacitat per a contribuir al desenvolupament dels drets fonamentals, la igualtat d'oportunitats entre homes i dones, els principis d'igualtat d'oportunitats i accessibilitat universal de les persones amb discapacitat, així com els valors propis d'una cultura de la pau i de valors democràtics.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE15 : Establir i actuar per a resoldre situacions de risc una vegada identificada i definida la seua naturalesa.
  • CE22 : Investigar, analitzar, avaluar i utilitzar el coneixement actual de les millors pràctiques del Treball Social per a revisar i actualitzar els propis coneixements sobre els marcs de treball.
  • CE24 : Gestionar conflictes, dilemes i problemes ètics complexos i identificar-los per a dissenyar estratègies de superació, i reflexionar sobre els seus resultats.
  • CE3 : Valorar les necessitats i opcions possibles per a orientar una estratègia d'intervenció.
  • CE9 : Treballar amb els comportaments que representen un risc per a les persones, famílies, grups, organitzacions i comunitats identificant i avaluant les situacions i circumstàncies que configuren aquest comportament i elaborant estratègies de modificació dels mateixos.

Conceptual

1. Know the concept, definition and current profile of Social Work.
2. Obtain a global and historical vision of the evolution of the concept and forms of social assistance.
3. Determine the impact that cultural, economic, political and religious elements have on the thought and concept of aid.
4. Master the facts and circumstances that determine the birth of social work and the first theoretical debates that arose in the profession.
5. Understand the process of theoretical and professional evolution of social work in general.
6. Master the particular facts and circumstances that determine the birth and evolution of social work in Spain.
7. Analyze and recognize similarities and differences between the evolution of general social work and that of Spain.
8. Reflect and critically approach the current situation and debate on the role and functions of contemporary social work.
9. Draw conclusions from the process and historical evolution of social assistance and social work.
10. Explain Social Work as a social and scientific discipline.
11. Situate Social Work within the framework of the contemporary epistemological debate of the Social Sciences.
12. Distinguish the theories and currents of thought that have had a dominant influence on Social Work.
13. Point out current trends and intervention paradigms in the profession.
