Course context for academic year 2024-25

Cartography is very important in the development of geographic activity, especially in the work applied to regional planning and environmental study, which becomes visual language of exchange of information between multidisciplinary groups involved in a project like this. Professionals GEOGRAPHY always been characterized by the ability of holistic understanding of the territory and for their great skill at the time of capture is character information complex on a graphic documentation of thematic cartography that becomes indispensable means of work and expression of research results.

The success and functionality of the information and communications technology (ICT) explains that in this subject using specialized databases, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or various information resources on the Internet, for learning is made development of thematic mapping quality and information management on the territory, with the aim of preparing students grade to meet the growing demand for geographic information by the XXI century.

In this subject apredenderemos manage geographic information for the development of Cartography, from a current technological context, through free and open tools recommended by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) and standardized data formats and standards included in the Open Geospatial Consortium ( OGC), while paying attention to the fundamental questions of Cartography throughout its history, to understand the full extent of the current importance of this matter and its undeniable social success.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2024-25

  • The geodetic knowledge needed to apply official reference systems at national and European environment: ETRS89 (European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 REGCAN95 for the scope of the Canary Islands) in the different cartographic works of Geography and Regional Planning
  • Define the Thematic mapping in relation to the cartographic discipline in general, to distinguish the most interesting and useful aspects of geography. Build, develop, analyze and evaluate thematic maps, especially those related to the environment and spatial planning
  • Analyze in detail the different types of treatment of the thematic component of geographic objects and their attributes information
  • Data processing for the mapping of aspects of Physical Geography, derived from the study of climate, topography or hydrography
  • Data processing for mapping reperesentación of human or economic activity in the terrotorio, land use or roads, among others
  • Explain in depth the characteristics of the Cartographic Semiotics for the use of visual symbols and variables in data representation in thematic maps, dominating concepts of scale and cartographic generalization
  • Develop and manage data from a thematic database: the definition and operation of a geodatabase for the development of Cartography (both printed on paper and electronic documents, PDF, ...) Distinguish between GIS and Mapping , to apply with other Geographic Information Technologies (Remote Sensing, Global Positioning Systems GPS, etc.) in the cartographic processing
  • Knowing the production process of different types of Cartography and the main producing organisms official and the regulations governing them, as well as electronic resources mapping information more usual (the spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) from different agencies, the directive INSPIRE and the main use WEB services (WMS, WFS, WCS ...)
  • Design and develop different types of thematic maps and learn to value the quality of cartographic elaboration as to the design components of a map
