Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2022-23

This undergraduate survey course is intended to function as a broad overview of the 19th Century. The aim is to construct a general picture of this century and then to interrogate the boundaries of this period (cultural, literary, social and historical). We will read a wide amount of critical, scientific and literary production in order to rethink the epistemic breaks between the Romantic, the Victorian and the Modern.

1. Consider a work of literature as a reflection of its cultural milieu and compare that milieu with his or her own.
2. Examine a work of literature from various vantage points.
3. Examine and analyse the various elements of a literary work.
4. Use basic concepts and terminology particular to literary analysis.
5. Recognise major themes in a work of literature, explore their implications, and identify their basic assumptions.
6. Analyse structure: understand how form contributes to meaning.
7. Appreciate the artistry of literary work and become better acquainted with writers and artists.
8. Recognise the need for literary evidence to support opinions and ideas regarding literary work.
9. Express opinions and responses to literature clearly and effectively in writing.
