Course context for academic year 2019-20

This subject is the first course in the sequence of Macroeconomics. It is continued with an Intermediate Macroeconomics course during the first semester of the second year. It falls within the subject Economic Analysis.

The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic knowledge, both theoretical and empirical, so as to understand and analyze economic problems at the aggregate level. Also teaches students to use critical thinking to raise economic problems and solve them.

  • To understand the basic problems addressed by Macroeconomics: activity, employment and aggregate prices.
  • To understand the indicators used to measure the aggregate progress of the economy.
  • To understand the importance of economic growth and the role played by the financial system.
  • To understand the nature of economic cycles and the economic policy tools used to stabilise fluctuations.
  • Introduction to the problems associated with open economies in their commercial and financial dealings with other countries.
