Course context for academic year 2018-19

This subject is devoted to the study of English literature from the end of the 19th century to the late 1930s, as well as to the critical analysis of specific texts and literary discourses belonging to that period.

This subject allows students taking the Degree in English Studies to acquire a solid knowledge of the historical and cultural foundations of British society. It is also an indispensable complement when learning English since it greatly reinforces the development of linguistic competence.

This subject helps students to develop skills in professional activities directly related to English. It also contributes to professional competence in fields related with the generation, edition and criticism of texts.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2018-19

Specific Aims

The students will have to:

-be able to identify the general characteristics of the historical evolution of English language and literature;

-know in detail the factors underlying the definition of the 20th century as a specific asthetic period; they will also have to be able to define and comment on those factors and contrast them with those corresponding to the previous historical periods.

-to know in detail the literary trends appearing between the Fin-de-siècle and the outbreak of WWII, including the main English avant-garde literary trends as well as the other main trends of the period of Modernism; they will also have to be able to define and critically analyze them in English.

-take coherent, useful and sufficient notes in English by paying attention to the lecturer's explanations and the diagrams and information provided by the lecturer on the blackboard.
