Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2023-24

This course will focus on the development of oral and written skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in the English language, using 20th century popular music as a vehicle. The main focus is on practising grammatical structures, acquiring vocabulary and strengthening communication skills, all through the analysis of iconic songs of the period. In addition to learning the language, students will be introduced to the historical and cultural context in which these compositions were born, gaining an enriching insight into the social and political issues of the English-speaking world at the time.

The course, which will take place over 14 sessions (two sessions per week), will not only focus on interpretation and linguistic production in English, but also on musical appreciation and understanding of the cultural and historical content linked to each piece studied. A practical and dynamic environment will be promoted, in which theoretical content will be provided to support the development of the proposed objectives, thus reinforcing previously acquired linguistic and cultural skills. The sessions will include a variety of activities involving active listening, debates, analysis of lyrics and communication exercises, encouraging student-student and student-teacher interaction, creating a rich collaborative learning environment.
