Course context for academic year 2023-24

A journey through two parallel paths in the history of cinema and series: original soundtracks and films about great musicians. From silent film pianists to biopics and current video art.

This is a course about the intense relationship between music and film, and therefore, in all sessions the focus of the conversation will be fragments of music and film. It will be essential that in each class we see or listen to at least one piece, so as to never lose contact with the base.
To attend it is not necessary to have studies in music theory, nor technical knowledge about film or the audiovisual world; the main focus is informative, open to any curious attendee. Even so, as the course seeks the active participation of the students, if someone shows a higher level of knowledge in any of these areas there will be room for them to express themselves.
The didactic approach is simple. The sessions of Block 1 are dedicated to a historical tour through the main milestones of film music. As the sessions progress, notions of music and image theory are gradually incorporated, until a small glossary of basic terms is formed. The sessions in Block 2 are more open-ended and also deal with general aspects of contemporary culture, as well as the biographies of some of the famous musicians whose lives and times have been brought to film.

Block 3, the shortest, is intended as a brief introduction to video art and the role of music and image in contemporary art; they serve as a conclusion to the rest and as a starting point to stimulate students' curiosity and independent research.

In short, the aim is that the participants can broaden their general knowledge about music and cinema, raise their concerns in this regard and form a thorough idea of the main artistic, cultural and (why not) commercial mechanisms involved in the crossover between music and film, from its beginnings to its more contemporary and experimental drifts.

In general terms, the thematic development is divided into three main blocks (developed in the following section):
- Block 1: Music for cinema (20 h // chronological perspective).
- Block 2: Musicians: film lives (16 h // thematic perspective)
- Block 3: Latest trends in music for the visual arts (4 hours // group exploration)
