Course context for academic year 2021-22
This course aims to describe the important role of fire in forest ecosystems. The effects of fire on nutrient dynamics and water balance, how they impact on the different soil horizons, and what is the short and long term response of vegetation and wildlife. An ecosystem view of the resilience of forest ecosystems in terms of the intensity of the disturbance is delivered. Environmental assessment and analysis of sectoral recovery plans are made. Criteria for managing fire are provided from its traditional use to monitoring and fire prevention in most vulnerable areas. Finally, guidelines for restoring burned areas are explained.
