Competencies and objectives


Course context for academic year 2019-20

This is the first maths course in the degree and students take it in the first term in their first year. Hence, this is an introductory course which deals with and formalizes more rigorously material which students may have already studied at high school. The first three parts deal with analyzing function of one real variable (limits, continuity, derivatives, graphs and integration). The last part deals with introductory concepts in linear algebra.

  • CG4 : Apply professional criteria based on the use of technical instruments to analyse problems.

  • CE11 : Analytical skills for developing theoretical frameworks that simplify study of the real economy and the capacity to set appropriate levels of abstraction when studying different economic questions.
  • CE12 : Be able to use the appropriate tools for the analysis, diagnosis and solution of economic questions and problems.
  • CE3 : Bring a rational approach to the analysis and description of any aspect of economic reality.
  • CE4 : Evaluate the consequences of different options for action and select the best one according to the objectives set.
  • CE9 : Understand economic institutions as the result and application of theoretical or formal representations of how the economy works.




Learning outcomes (Training objectives)

  • To use of mathematical language and its application in the representation and interpretation of economic models.
  • To develop the ability to use mathematical reasoning and apply it to real situations in the economic world. Ability to use computer techniques for problem solving.
  • To develop the ability to access the economic information provided by mathematical models.
  • To develop the capacity for the analysis and resolution of problems, both individually and in groups.
  • Knowledge and use of Linear Algebra tools and theirinterpretation in economic terms.
  • Knowledge and use of one-variable calculus tools and their interpretation in economic terms.
  • To develop the ability to use the computer software necessary to solve problems.
