  MAJOR FIGURES IN ENGLISH LITERATURE I

Course context for academic year 2010-11

La asignatura contextualiza en su marco histórico y cultural los principales autores en lengua inglesa desde el final del romanticismo hasta nuestros días y ayuda a encuadrar en el marco general de la literatura universal esta influyente y diversa tradición literaria. Se centra en una selección de autores y obras representativas y se destaca aquello que caracteriza la tradición literaria inglesa en contraste con otras tradiciones europeas. El curso está diseñado para estudiantes que no cursen Filología Inglesa, de manera que sólo será necesario el nivel A2 de inglés. La lectura de obras extranjeras se hará en versiones originales y/o bilingües.

  • CE2 : Understand History and the major artistic and philosophical currents of Mankind, particularly the classical foundations on which European cultural reality is based, and be able to transmit them by promoting the social value of culture.
  • CE3 : Master one or more foreign languages to facilitate access to the production and interpretation of cultures in their diverse expressions, especially contemporary culture, cultural diversity and its management.
  • CE5 : Assess and interpret the cultural diversity of the Region of Valencia, contrasting the indigenous cultures of the region with other cultures with which relations and contacts are established, using the official languages as the vehicles for interaction.
  • CE7 : Make creative entrepreneurial use of the basic principles of the public and private organisation and management of ICTs to evaluate, create and carry out cultural dissemination projects.
  • CE8 : Acquire skills to prepare and display content related to the human and social sciences for dissemination and for educating secondary school children, using personal skills and ICT.

  • CE11 : Be able to develop reading, analysis and synthesis techniques, formulate working hypotheses, demonstrate them with arguments and reach conclusions, as well as recognise and ensure the textual coherence (structure of the text, organisation of ideas, progression of information, use of keywords), to explain and argue any subject related to Catalan language and literature, thus achieving the role of expert, transmitter and adviser regarding the knowledge acquired.
  • CE7 : Capacity to understand the historical trends of literature in the Catalan language and its context, to define the evolution of literary thinking in the Catalan language and its social impact.
  • CE8 : Capacity to understand the different epochs, movements, models and values described in Catalan literature, as well as the traditions in which they are set, the specific textual resources used, paying special attention to the comparative study of common and different elements, within the same or between different literary contexts.
  • CE9 : Capacity to identify the currents of literary criticism, their categories, concepts and nomenclature as a key factor in the development of the capacity to criticise and analyse text (literary, cinematographic, advertising), as regards the creative manifestation and reflection of the sociocultural context.

 

DEGREE IN FRENCH STUDIES

  • CE11 : Capacity to use pertinent resources and materials: bibliographic repertories, reference works and the new ICTs as an autonomous learner able to control the learning process and progress independently in it.
  • CE14 : Capacity to interpret and analyse the main stages, movements, writers and works of the Literature of a second language.
  • CE6 : Capacity to analyse and criticise literary texts as a creative manifestation and reflection of the sociocultural context.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2010-11

a) Objetivos generales 1. Consolidar los conocimientos activos y pasivos de la lengua inglesa mediante la lectura e interpretación crítica de textos literarios y la elaboración supervisada de trabajos. b) Objetivos conceptuales 2. Determinar las partes constitutivas de los conceptos básicos que forman la materia literatura en lengua inglesa referida a épocas históricas más recientes, y las relaciones mutuas entre aquellas, así como construir unidades complejas de pensamiento a partir de ideas independientes, fundándose en sus rasgos comunes. 3. Conocer las características sociales, económicas, políticas de la cultura angloamericana en épocas recientes, y relacionar con ellas autores, obras y tendencias de las que se ocupa esta asignatura. 4. Establecer relaciones de aplicación práctica bidireccional entre los conceptos abstractos adquiridos y el espacio significativo de los textos literarios sujetos a análisis e interpretación. c) Objetivos procedimentales 5. Ser capaz de emprender tareas y proyectos sin supervisión o impulso externo constantes y de debatir los resultados de manera objetiva y equilibrada. 6. Distinguir periodos en el desarrollo de la literatura de lengua inglesa en épocas históricas más recientes, situar en ellos autores y obras específicas, y definir las características principales de éstas, así como caracterizar las diferentes corrientes estéticas que se perfilan. 7. Conocer los métodos y técnicas de análisis literario desarrolladas en la cultura de lengua inglesa con referencia a las épocas históricas estudiadas en esta asignatura. 8. Analizar, de manera crítica, obras concretas, o fragmentos, de la literatura inglesa correspondientes a épocas históricas más recientes, aplicando un método ordenado y coherente, y determinar sus características formales y la relación de éstas con el establecimiento de la gama de significados hipotéticos admisibles. d) Objetivos actitudinales 9. Ser capaz de negarse a admitir cursos de razonamiento ajenos que provengan de posiciones de autoridad, sin someterlos a juicio personal, y actuar de igual modo con las ideas propias, tratándolas como si fueran de otros. 10. Adquirir la convicción de que el perspectivismo que da el trabajo en grupo contribuye a mejorar los resultados y a evitar el ensimismamiento obsesivo en las ideas propias que puede conducir al error. 11. Comprometerse a trabajar por la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres, y valorar la múltiple conformación de la sociedad actual con una actitud de respeto hacia los derechos fundamentales de las personas.
