The subject "Structural Determination of Organic Compounds " (26030) is a third year (5th semester) subject of the Degree in Chemistry.
It is a compulsory subject of the fundamental module associated with the area of Organic Chemistry that consists of 6 ECTS credits.
In this course, the basic knowledge about different instrumental techniques, as well as their practical application to obtain information and structure determination of organic compounds, will be provided.
This subject is related to the following courses:
Degree in Chemistry (second year): "Organic Chemistry" (26020) and "Organic Stereochemistry" (26027).
Degree in Chemistry (third year): "Advanced Organic Chemistry" (26035).
Official Master in Medicinal Chemistry: "Advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance" (36643) and "Analysis by Bioorganic Mass Spectrometry" (36638).

Generic UA Competences
The student must be familiar with and should have appropriate knowledge of the previous Organic Chemistry courses. Also, the students must have an appropriate level of English to enable them to understand the scientific literature and properly follow the corresponding seminars.
1. Knowledge objectives: a) Understand the concepts, principles and theories that link spectroscopic techniques with the different areas of Chemistry. b) Accurately handle the concepts and fundamentals of the different techniques. c) Properly handle specific terminology.
2. Procedure Objectives: a) Use all the knowledge acquired during the course about the different spectroscopic (IR and NMR) and spectrometric (MS) techniques to determine the structure of organic compounds. b) Use, get and correctly interpret the information obtained from tables and graphs related with the structural determination of organic compounds. c) Properly connect the spectra of an organic compound with its stereochemistry.
3. Attitude objectives: a) Maintain an attitude of constant curiosity in learning the subject. b) Encourage critical thinking and improve the ability of synthesis and analysis. c) Promote accuracy when suggesting questions about the structure of an organic compound.
