Course context for academic year 2026-27

As generators of knowledge, universities are key institutions for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. They act as agents of change in the face of major social, economic and environmental challenges. In this context, it is essential that trainee researchers understand the relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), identify their connection with current lines of research, and be able to implement innovative and responsible solutions through their own doctoral projects. It is therefore necessary to equip pre-doctoral researchers with the knowledge and skills to understand and address the SDGs, provide them with meaningful professional experience in implementing solutions to the SDGs, and promote accessible and inclusive scientific transfer.
This cross-disciplinary training activity, which is compulsory and common to all doctoral programmes, is managed and delivered by the University of Alicante’s Doctoral School (EIDUA). This course responds to the growing demand to accelerate the integration of the SDGs into scientific research, particularly in a context of global urgency and with just a few years remaining until the deadline set by the United Nations. It is therefore presented as an educational opportunity to reflect critically on the role of science in social transformation, whilst promoting research geared towards the common good, equity and sustainability.

Competencias básicas

  • CB11 : Systematic comprehension of a field of study and mastery of the skills and research methods related to said field. (The term "field" is replaced by "area" as from the application of Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July)
  • CB12 : Ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice, and adopt a substantial research or creation process.
  • CB13 : Ability to contribute to the expansion of knowledge barriers through original research.
  • CB16 : Ability to foment scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural advances within a knowledge-based society in academic and professional contexts.
  • CB17 : Ability to promote Open Science and Citizen Science, in accordance with article 12 of Spanish Organic Law 2/2023, of 22 March, as means of contributing to the consideration of scientific knowledge as a common good. This can be accomplished by assessing transversal activities conducted by the doctoral student. The activities shall be related to different dimensions of Open Science and Citizen Science, as well as the training acquired in these disciplines in the form of micro-credentials or similar (from the application of Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July).
  • CB6 : Poseer y comprender conocimientos que aporten una base u oportunidad de ser originales en el desarrollo y/o aplicación de ideas, a menudo en un contexto de investigación.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2026-27

The specific objectives of this cross-disciplinary training programme are:

  • To facilitate an understanding of the SDG framework and its applicability in diverse scientific contexts.
  • To foster the development of skills in systemic analysis, interdisciplinarity and the inclusive transfer of knowledge.
  • To provide practical tools enabling PhD students to design, carry out and communicate research aligned with the principles of sustainable development.
