Competencies and objectives
Course context for academic year 2026-27
This course examines the use of English in tourism and leisure contexts from linguistic, discursive, and professional perspectives. It explores the main lexical, discursive, pragmatic, and multimodal features of tourism discourse in English, as well as the wide range of genres and communicative contexts found within the contemporary tourism industry.
The course also introduces students to professional communication in areas such as tourist accommodation, travel agencies, tour operators, and digital tourism distribution platforms. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between language, persuasion, promotion, and the construction of the tourist experience, together with the analysis of specialised texts addressed both to tourism professionals and to consumers and travellers.
Throughout the course, students develop the skills required to analyse, interpret, and produce specialised discourse in English related to tourism and leisure, integrating discourse analysis tools, specialised terminology, and current approaches to research in languages for specific purposes.
