Course context for academic year 2026-27

Radiology is the medical specialty concerned with the morphological, dynamic, morphofunctional, and cellular activity assessment of internal organs and structures. It determines human anatomy, anatomical variants, and physiopathological or pathological changes, using as its primary technical support the images and functional data obtained with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation and other energy sources (Order SCO/634/2008).

Radiologists are doctors who employ up-to-date medical imaging techniques focused on the patient's needs to provide information that is continuously integrated into the multidisciplinary diagnostic process, while maintaining a leading role in diagnosis. In some cases, they subsequently assume direct responsibility for the treatment of certain diseases through minimally invasive image-guided techniques.
Basic and Clinical Radiology is a compulsory course offered during the third year of the Medicine degree at the University of Alicante. It comprises 6 ECTS credits and is taught during the first semester of the academic year.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2026-27

* To understand the technical principles of the main imaging modalities employed to obtain diagnostic images of the human body.

* To know the risks associated with medical imaging techniques and how to take precautions to avoid or minimize them.

* To identify the main anatomical structures on images obtained using the principal medical imaging modalities.

* To select the most appropriate medical imaging technique for each clinical condition, taking into account its diagnostic performance, patient safety, impact on the patient's quality of life, and cost to the healthcare system.

* To make an etiological diagnostic approach based on the semiological interpretation of findings obtained from medical imaging examinations.
