Course context for academic year 2026-27

The main objective of the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management is to train professionals capable of carrying out management, advisory and assessment tasks in productive organisations. These functions may be performed either at the overall organisational level or in any of the firm’s functional areas: production, human resources, finance, marketing, administration or accounting.

Within this context, the course Strategic Management I introduces students to the strategic management process, which is further developed in Strategic Management II, taught in the second semester. Together, these two courses aim to provide an overall view of the firm from the perspective of top management. In particular, Strategic Management I addresses the foundations of the subject and focuses on the early stages of the strategic process. More specifically, it deals with strategic analysis and the formulation of business-level strategies.

From the perspective of its coordination within the academic structure of the degree, Strategic Management I builds on concepts previously introduced in courses such as Fundamentals of Business Economics, Operations Management and Organisation Design. It also develops contents that students will need to master in order to benefit more fully from later or related courses, such as Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, International Business Strategy and Management, and Quality and Environmental Management.
