Course context for academic year 2026-27

Knowledge of construction materials provides future Graduates in Technical Architecture with the necessary tools to consider the functional requirements of each of the constructive systems in which they may be used on site, given that the characteristics of construction materials guarantee the proper performance of their function. For each function, in addition to possible regulatory requirements, the interrelation both between the different materials sharing a function and with the surrounding environment during their installation on site must also be taken into account. From a technical point of view, all of this will allow for the control of the correct installation of the material on site. In addition to technical criteria, economic, ecological, and aesthetic criteria will also play a role in controlling the installation of the material and must be considered. Therefore, the course Construction Materials I addresses the basic and essential knowledge of natural and artificial stone material families, and begins training in the site control criteria for their use in the Building Sector. The knowledge acquired through the study of this course must be reinforced, applied, and developed in subsequent courses across different fields of knowledge within the Bachelor's Degree in Technical Architecture.

  • O7 : To provide technical advice in the manufacturing processes of materials and elements used in building construction.

 

Conocimientos/Contenidos

  • CE04 : Knowledge of traditional or prefabricated materials and construction systems used in building, their varieties, and the physical and mechanical characteristics that define them.
  • CG04 : Knowledge of the chemical characteristics of materials used in construction, their manufacturing processes, the methodology for testing their characteristics, their geological origin, environmental impact, recycling, and waste management.

 

Skills/Competences

  • CE05 : Ability to adapt construction materials to the typology and use of the building, manage and direct the reception and quality control of materials, their placement on site, control the execution of work units, and carry out final tests and trials

LEARNING OBJECTIVES (TRAINING):

Ability to identify the suitability of construction materials for their subsequent quality control during the execution of work units, as well as conducting tests and final trials in building construction, following functional, aesthetic, ecological, and economic criteria.

Adequate knowledge of physical problems and the different technologies, as well as the installation of materials on site, in order to provide the building with internal conditions of comfort, health, and protection against climatic factors.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

To enable the rational on-site control of construction materials of natural or artificial stone origin, most appropriate for real-world situations of use and installation in building construction, following functional, aesthetic, ecological, and economic criteria.

To enable the use of scientific-technical vocabulary related to construction materials of natural or artificial stone origin.

To provide the necessary basic knowledge on the nature and behavior of different construction materials of natural or artificial stone origin.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR THE STUDY OF EACH MATERIAL:

To know the nature of the material and its influence on its behavior.To know its properties, both intrinsic and in response to external mechanical, physical, or chemical actions.To know the existing varieties of the same material.

To introduce the control of the material according to the general and specific requirements of its use in the Building Sector to minimize environmental impact, and promote recycling and waste management.

To know the current regulations regarding construction materials of natural or artificial stone origin.
