Course context for academic year 2025-26

Knowledge and awareness of the features of legal English, both in itself and compared to Spanish. Written and oral comprehension of general legal texts and of those specific areas related to intercultural mediation. Acquisition of terminological and subject-matter documentation skills as related to legal English. Introduction to monolingual and comparative research in legal English.

  • CG01 : Know how to apply the main perspectives, theories, techniques and analysis models in the field of interdisciplinary research of linguistics applied to the study of the IFE.
  • CG02 : Know how to apply the main perspectives, theories, techniques and analysis models in the field of interdisciplinary research of linguistics applied to the study of the EFE.
  • CG04 : Know how to integrate knowledge and deal with the complexity of giving opinions on the basis of information that may be incomplete or limited and includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with applying their knowledge and judgements in academic and research contexts.

  • CE06 : Be able to analyse the communicative genres of the different varieties of IFE.
  • CE09 : Be able to transmit the techniques of Plain English and its application to legal English.
  • CE17 : Be able to elucidate the linguistic nature that distinguishes the varieties of IFE: the terminology, syntax, rhetorical organisation and communicative strategies.
  • CE18 : Be able to control the idiosyncratic subtleties and cultural and social differences that are essential for interpersonal communication in academic and professional settings (cultural values, rules of courtesy, non-verbal communication, etc.).

  • Identificación de los rasgos principales del inglés jurídico.
  • Comparación del inglés jurídico con el lenguaje general desde el punto de vista comunicativo.
  • Reconocimiento de los géneros principales del inglés jurídico.
  • Identificación de los géneros y el lenguaje jurídico relevante para situaciones de la vida diaria y/o hechos culturales.
  • Manejo crítico de las fuentes bibliográficas y autoaprendizaje del inglés jurídico.

 

 

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2025-26

I. General aims

1) Developing language and communicative competence in legal English.

1b) Provide students with the basic terminological and communication skills enabling them to include Legal English in their "skills portfolio" for prospective employment. 


II. Conceptual aims

2) Knowing and mastering the basic terminology of legal English and of the areas dealt with.

3) Knowing the linguistic traits distinguishing the varieties of legal English: terminology, syntax, rhetorical structure and communicative strategies.

4) Knowing the importance of the Plain English movement and its impact on legal English, and also the strategies of inclusive language with a gender perspective in English.

5) Possessing a basic knowledge of the legal culture and institutions of English-speaking countries, both in themselves and compared with Spanish.

III. Procedural aims

6) Managing and assessing documentary resources for the comprehension, production or translation of specialized texts, from English into Spanish and vice versa.

7) Being able to support, as far as legal English is concerned, corporate staff participating in trips, trade fairs, trade missions, etc. and managing, organizing, interpreting and drafting texts and documents in legal English in legal contexts.

8) Acting as a language mediator in legal contexts between native and non-native speakers of English or Spanish.

9) Summarize, reformulate and translate specialized texts from English into Spanish and vice versa.

10) Using computer and virtual resources in order to solve linguistic problems regarding the interpretation or drafting of legal texts.

11) Preparing and delivering oral academic presentations in English on legal topics.

12) Using computer resources for the creation of monolingual or bilingual glossaries on legal topics.

13) Using virtual resources in order to obtain information towards the contextualization of legal English or the transmission of such information.

14) Being able to cooperate with legal and other related professionals.
