Course context for academic year 2025-26

Economic, Commercial, and Financial Translation B-A/ A-B I (English-Spanish) is a course offered in the fourth year of the Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting. It provides students with an introduction to translation practice in the economic-financial domain. Throughout the course, students will work with authentic texts representative of economic discourse, focusing on direct and inverse translation between the two working languages and developing skills in addressing textual, lexical, syntactic, and cultural challenges.

The methodology combines theoretical classes with practical sessions centered on the execution of translation assignments, the creation of specialized glossaries, and the critical review of translated texts. Additionally, essential technological tools for the professional setting will be integrated, including computer-assisted translation tools, terminological databases, and post-editing techniques.

The main objective is to equip students with the necessary skills to manage translation projects in economic, commercial, and financial contexts, applying adaptive translation strategies and ensuring quality, consistency, and accuracy in the target text.

General Competences (CG)

  • CG1 : Competència comunicativa en les diferents llengües de treball: llengües A (català/castellà, nivell C2 del marc europeu), llengües B (nivell B2/C1), llengües C (nivell B1/B2 per a les llengües que s'ensenyen en secundària, i nivell A2/B1 per a les llengües que no s'ensenyen en secundària), i llengües D (nivell A1/A2). La competència comunicativa (oral i escrita) s'entén referida a la comprensió i a l'expressió, i inclou la subcompetència gramatical (domini del codi lingüístic), la subcompetència sociolingüística (regula l'adequació al context i està vinculada a la variació lingüística que es produeix segons els diversos elements de registre), la subcompetència pragmàtica (relacionada amb l'ús funcional de la llengua i amb el domini del discurs, la cohesió i la coherència). La competència comunicativa ha d'incloure com a mínim dues llengües i cultures (inclou fases passives i actives de la comunicació, així com les convencions textuals de les diferents cultures de treball i els coneixeme
  • CG2 : Instrumental competence. Includes the use of documentary sources, terminology search and the management of glossaries, databases, etc., and also the use of the most useful computer applications for exercising the profession (text editors, desktop publishers, databases, Internet, e-mail, translation and editing programmes, translation memories, etc.), as well as other tools such as the fax, dictaphone and the mechanisms and apparatus needed for interpreting booths, etc.).
  • CG3 : Competència per a l'exercici de la professió en el mercat laboral i deontològica, integrada pels coneixements i les habilitats que tenen relació amb l'exercici de la traducció professional i el mercat de treball. Inclou coneixements bàsics per a la gestió de l'exercici professional i aspectes relacionats amb el dret públic i privat, l'economia i l'empresa (contractes, obligacions fiscals, pressupostos, aspectes econòmics, facturació, etc.) i sobre el codi deontològic i les associacions professionals. I també habilitats com la memòria, els reflexos, la creativitat, capacitats com la confiança, la capacitat d'atenció, organització i planificació, de memòria, la capacitat d'anàlisi i síntesi, d'automatització de les tasques més habituals, la presa de decisions, l'interès pel treball ben fet i la professionalitat, la capacitat d'adaptació a noves situacions, la iniciativa, etc. A més d'aptituds interpersonals, com a capacitat per a interrelacionar-se i treballar professionalment en equip,
  • CG4 : Competence in transference or strategy, understood as the ability to carry out the transference process from the original text and re-express it in the mother tongue according to the purpose of the translation, the characteristics of the recipient and other parameters of the translation project for all kinds of general and specialised texts. Includes subcompetences relating to the procedures applied for organising the work involved, identifying and solving problems and self-assessment, documentation strategies and the ability to use procedures to compensate for deficiencies in other subcompetences and solve problems during the translation process.

  • CE2.1 : Use computer resources and applications that are useful for translation (terminology management programs, translation memories, CAT or automatic programs, databases, search engines, etc.).
  • CE2.2 : Master information and document search techniques.

  • CE3.1 : Understand how the translation market works (type of translator, types of translation, type of task, etc.).
  • CE3.10 : Develop the capacity for logical and critical reasoning.
  • CE3.3 : Organise work and design, manage and coordinate translation projects.
  • CE3.8 : Proofread rigorously and guarantee the quality of translations.

  • CE4.1 : Understand the technical aspects, current translation trends and other interdisciplinary approaches in the field of translation.
  • CE4.2 : Apply theoretical knowledge to practical translation.
  • CE4.3 : Assimilate the communicative purpose of translation, the importance of quality in the target language and the importance of the comprehension stage.
  • CE4.4 : Assimilate the dynamism and textual nature of equivalence in translation.
  • CE4.5 : Assimilate the importance of extralinguistic knowledge and the need for documentation.
  • CE4.6 : Develop creativity to solve translation problems.
  • CE4.7 : Know how to cover the different stages of the translation process.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2025-26

1. Enhance the ability to detect, analyze, and address translation challenges specific to economic, commercial, and financial English, with particular emphasis on lexical, syntactic, and cultural difficulties. This objective will be achieved through the critical analysis of authentic texts, the application of translation strategies, and the development of specialized glossaries that reflect functional equivalents in English and Spanish.

2. Develop the ability to identify, compare, and analyze syntactic structures and terminological variations characteristic of economic, commercial, and financial English through practice with authentic texts and previously translated materials. Critical reflection on the translation strategies employed will be encouraged, focusing on the assessment of strengths, weaknesses, and alternative solutions to specific translation challenges.

3. Build competencies in the use of technological tools applied to economic, commercial, and financial translation, with special emphasis on specialized linguistic resources, translation-assisted tools, and post-editing techniques aimed at optimizing the accuracy, consistency, and quality of the target text.
