Competencies and objectives
Course context for academic year 2025-26
The subject Practicum XI: Nursing Care in Mental Health and Community Intervention is taught in the second semester of the fourth year of the Degree in Nursing. It is a curricular external practice subject that finds its theoretical and conceptual basis in the subject “Nursing in Community Intervention, Mental Health, Psychiatry and Ethics,” taken during the first semester of the same year.
Practicum XI is developed through face-to-face practices, tutored by accredited clinical and academic professionals. These practices encourage critical reflection on the healthcare experience and enhance the integration of knowledge, technical and non-technical skills, as well as professional attitudes based on the ethics of care.
The main objective of the subject is to offer students a training space where they can develop comprehensive nursing care, aimed at promoting the autonomy and well-being of people, considering their physical and mental health holistically. To do this, it is necessary to understand the processes that affect mental health, identify the factors that condition it and know the nursing interventions based on scientific evidence that favor recovery in different healthcare contexts, both community and hospital.
This training is articulated from a biopsychosocial approach, which understands mental health as the result of the dynamic interaction between biological, psychological and social factors. Within this framework, community work is promoted as a key strategy for promoting, preventing and monitoring mental health. In addition, students are trained to intervene effectively in crises and mental illness processes, guaranteeing person-centred care and oriented towards recovery.
In addition, the subject directly contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. In particular, it aligns with SDG 3 (Health and Well-being) and promotes a holistic view of psychological well-being. It also relates to other SDGs linked to the social determinants of health, such as education (SDG 4), decent work (SDG 8), poverty reduction (SDG 1) and the creation of healthy and sustainable environments (SDG 11). This reinforces the importance of training health professionals to be committed to a care model that considers the social, economic, and environmental contexts in which people live.
