Competencies and objectives
Course context for academic year 2024-25
Carbon materials (or carbonaceous materials) have unique properties that make them very interesting or even indispensable in many applications. These properties depend on the very nature of the main element that composes them (carbon), on the forms of bonding (between carbon atoms and other atoms) and on the structural characteristics (morphology, porosity, ...) etc. Carbon materials constitute a large family that is in continuous evolution and improvement, and that constitutes an important area of the Materials Science. The study of this family of materials and their main properties is the main object of the course.
The contents of this optional course are related to some others of the Master in Materials Science such as "Applications of carbon materials", "Fundamentals of Adsorption and Catalysis", "Heterogeneous Catalysis" and "Thermal Analysis".
Knowledge of carbon materials contributes to students' R&D training, since they are at the base of many lines of research dedicated to the innovation and development of materials for new applications and improvement of current ones.
