Course context for academic year 2024-25
- The subject of Inglés I will be imparted in the last year of the undergraduate degree courses of Engineering and Architecture.
- The students are strongly advised to have previous knowledge of the language (A2 or equivalent level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
- Inglés I will necessarily contain solid technical and scientific components linguistically dealt with, which will eventually permit students to tackle oral and written information required in their formal academic and professional training. Specifically, Inglés I seeks to enable students to acquire the abilities and strategies to read and understand oral and written texts of technical and scientific nature.
- Students should be able to know and reasonably apply linguistic and extra-linguistic resources which feature scientific discourse in English in order to effectively address and solve relevant issues in their particular fields.

- CB 1 : Que los estudiantes hayan demostrado poseer y comprender conocimientos en un área de estudio que parte de la base de la educación secundaria general, y se suele encontrar a un nivel que, si bien se apoya en libros de texto avanzados, incluye también algunos aspectos que implican conocimientos procedentes de la vanguardia de su campo de estudio.
- CB 2 : Que los estudiantes sepan aplicar sus conocimientos a su trabajo o vocación de una forma profesional y posean las competencias que suelen demostrarse por medio de la elaboración y defensa de argumentos y la resolución de problemas dentro de su área de estudio.
- CB 3 : That students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make judgements that include reflection on relevant social, scientific or ethical issues.

General Objectives
- Acquire and know how to use the language of English for science and technology.
- Develop strategies to identify and analyze the most usual semantic-syntactical structures in oral and written scientific discourse channeled in English.
- Acquire the skills to interpret and apply the language of visuals.
- Acquire and put into practice varying reading speeds to apply them for different reading purposes: skimming, scanning, and so on.
- Know how to take notes and how to summarize oral passages from lectures delivered in English of scientific and technical content
- Acquire strategies for an effective oral communication to address issues pertaining to the world of science and engineering.
- Know how to use ICT effectively enough to develop oral and written communicative activities in the LMS (Moodle)
- Make a repertoire of question-solving techniques available to the students to undertake any challenging activity of scientific and technical nature delivered in English
The lecturers’ specific aims for the subject
- Build up the means to reach the standards for level B1 as established in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Practise oral and written reception and production strategies in the ICT most relevant fields (academic, job market, publicity to name some).
