Competencies and objectives
Course context for academic year 2024-25
This subject contributes to the professional profile of this Grade by acquiring scientific-technic abilities in order to develop the job of Civil Engineering, and also specific abilities dealing with theoretical and practical knowledge of chemistry, physics, mechanical and technological properties of materials most used in construction.
“Materials of Construction II” is a compulsory subject to be studied during second year of this Civil Engineering Grade. It means the students already know some basic knowledge acquired during subjects in the previous year, like Materials Of Construction I, Fundamentals of Chemistry in Civil Engineering, Fundamentals of Physics in Civil Engineering, Mechanics for Engineers, Geology Applied to Civil Engineering, Fundamentals of Mathematics in Civil Engineering. The knowledge acquired during this subject will be helpful in order to deep into other subjects in the third and fourth year of this Grade.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2024-25
- The student will learn the relationship between the behavior of materials, its nature and the fabrication process.
- Deeping into the knowledge of properties and characteristics of materials, in a way this can be employed to solve real problems dealing with its using.
- Knowing the right way materials must be used.
- Knowing the proceedings that must be employed in order to preserve in time these materials, and the constructions where they have been used.
- Develop the right criteria in order to a proper selection of materials.
- Knowing the technical legislation dealing with these materials.
- Developing students abstraction ability, in a way they can relate acquired concepts one with each other. This enhances the possibility of solving new problems in the practical job dealing with materials used in construction.
