Course context for academic year 2024-25

This course introduces and examines the basic concepts of language and linguistics. It is intended to provide you with a general understanding and a broader context on the nature of language. It will also help you synthesize and reflect on your own linguistic knowledge through the Theory of Language.

DEGREE IN ARABIC & ISLAMIC STUDIES

 

General Competences (CG)

  • CG1 : Ability to obtain and manage information to allow learning throughout life.
  • CG10 : Relate Arabic Studies with Philology and other disciplines, as well as work in interdisciplinary teams in national and international contexts.
  • CG11 : Appreciate diversity, plurilingualism and multiculturalism in modern society.
  • CG12 : Respect fundamental rights and promote democratic values, equality of men and women, equal opportunities and universal accessibility for the disabled and the values of peaceful culture.
  • CG2 : Capacity to put the knowledge acquired into practice.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE1 : Understand the key theories of the disciplines associated with Arab and Islamic Studies and apply them in practice to be able to operate appropriately in the different professional profiles accessible through the degree qualification or undertake further studies with a high level of autonomy.
  • CE3 : Understand the specific linguistic characteristics of Arabic to use it correctly and apply said characteristics to the analysis, understanding, production and adaptation of Arabic in its oral and written forms, as well as linguistic contrast and translation.
  • CE4 : Understand the geographical varieties of Arabic and communicate in Arabic dialects (Maghreb and Eastern) to interact satisfactorily in the professional contexts accessible through of the degree qualification.
  • CE5 : Capacity to interpret, produce and develop academic descriptions and arguments and/or technical reports related to the professional contexts that can be accessed with the degree qualification.

 

Transversal Competences

  • CGUA2 : Be able to use basic ICT tools at user level.
  • CGUA3 : Be able to express oneself correctly in one of the two official languages of the Region of Valencia, in the context of one's discipline.

 

DEGREE IN CATALAN STUDIES

 

General Competences (CG)

  • CG1 : Capacity to master the key theories, perspectives and conceptualisations for constructing the theoretical framework of linguistic and literary disciplines applied to Catalan language and literature as an expert on the subject and in different professional profiles.
  • CG2 : Capacity to understand the role of language in the construction of human beings as active members of a linguistic and cultural community and relate this to the function of individuals in society.
  • CG3 : Capacity to develop reading, analysis and synthesis techniques.
  • CG7 : Social commitment to the equality of men and women, the plurality and diversity of the realities of modern society, to peace and democracy.

 

General Competences acquired at University of Alicante (CGUA)

  • CGUA3 : Ability to communicate effectively and have linguistic understanding of one of the two official languages of the Region of Valencia (Spanish or Catalan) in their discipline.

 

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE1 : Capacity to communicate in the Catalan language in communicative situations (oral and written), allowing fluid communication in the professional and academic areas in which the student will be working in the future, taking into account his/her knowledge of the historical, social, cultural and artistic reality of his/her context.
  • CE10 : Capacity to use the pertinent resources and materials for self-learning (bibliographies, dictionaries, reference works, terminological works, tutorials, new technologies) and transmit the information in the Catalan language.
  • CE3 : Capacity to understand the pragmatic, textual and discursive characteristics of the Catalan language to use, transmit and apply knowledge to the analysis, comprehension and production of Catalan in oral and written forms.

 

DEGREE IN FRENCH STUDIES

 

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE11 : Capacity to use pertinent resources and materials: bibliographic repertories, reference works and the new ICTs as an autonomous learner able to control the learning process and progress independently in it.
  • CE12 : Capacity to respect, value and take advantage of multilingualism and multiculturalism as a social agent participating in building a plural and tolerant society on the basis of the multicultural configuration of the Francophone world.

 

Generic Degree Course Competences

  • CG1 : Capacity to work and learn both autonomously and in a team.
  • CG10 : Capacity for self-criticism that enhances one's concern for quality and continuous improvement.

  • CC5 : Capacity to communicate in the language of the speciality (Spanish) and in a second language in oral and written situations to enable fluid communication in the future professional and/or academic contexts the student will be involved with in the future.

  • CP18 : Be able to use the standard model of the Spanish language and the mechanisms of lexical creation and innovation as an active member of a society in permanent evolution to adapt the Spanish language to the communication needs of its speakers.
  • CP20 : Capacity to use the pertinent materials and resources: bibliographic repertories, dictionaries, works of reference, critical editions, translations and ICTs as an independent learner able to control one's own learning process and make the corresponding independent progress.

  • CA22 : Be able to value and take advantage of multilingualism and multiculturalism as a social agent participating in the construction of a plural and tolerant society on the basis of the multicultural configuration of the Spanish-speaking world.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2024-25

1) To help you understand human language and the roots of modern linguistics;
2) To acquaint you with the basic concepts and terminology of the field of linguistics so that you can develop the ability to discuss linguistic questions using linguistic terminology;

3) To help you develop the competence to formulate and carry out a research assignment relevant for the area with a high degree of independence and in a critical evaluating way.

 

Other aims of this course are:

To lead you to examine your own linguistic beliefs and attitudes and their application to practice. 

To acquaint you with the basic concepts and terminology of the field of linguistics so that you can develop the ability to discuss linguistic questions using linguistic terminology.
To make you aware of both the diversity of language systems and their fundamental similarities.
To give you a reasonable taste of the major subfields of linguistics.
To assist you in acquiring reference material and in participating in academic discussion in the field concerned.
To equip you with some tools and techniques for linguistics analysis and to give you some practice in using these to discover the organizing principles of a language.
To acquaint you with the basic concepts necessary to further pursue linguistic studies, if you wish to.
